How to Create Long and Short Answer Questions

For some teachers, a short or long answer type questions could be needed for an assignment. On the platform, we allow you to create questions in this format which can be helpful for short free response/essay type questions.

A video tutorial on how to do this is shown below.

You can also follow the proposed steps:

1.) After creating an assignment, scroll to the bottom of your assignment and click Create new question.

Note: If you want to just have essay questions and no multiple choice, you can either remove all multiple choice questions or indicate “0” questions when creating the assignment.

This will bring you to assignment page where you’ll notice there are no multiple choice questions added.

2.) From the drop down list of question types, select either Short answer or Long answer

Short Answer Questions

1.) Tag your question with a topic (Examples: Civil Rights Movement, Ottoman Empire, Huckleberry Finn)

2.) If Short Answer was selected, you will be presented with text windows:

  • Question body- this is where you put the question
  • Answer body- this is where you put the answer
  • Answer explanation- this is where you explain the answer

3.) Fill the following sections with your content while taking advantage of the WYSIWYG Editor (what you see is what you get) located in each section. This editor allows you to edit the format of the text.

4.) When the question is ready to be added to the assignment, click Add to Assignment

How to make Long Answer Questions

1.) Tag your question with a topic (Examples: Civil Rights Movement, Ottoman Empire, Huckleberry Finn)

2.) If Long Answer was selected, you will be presented with text windows:

  • Points worth- this is where you indicate how much the answer is worth
  • Question body- this is where you put your prompt
  • Grading Rubric- this is where you explain how to grade the prompt indicating where points should be awarded

3.) Fill the following sections with your content while taking advantage of the WYSIWYG Editor (what you see is what you get) located in each section. This editor allows you to edit the format of the text.
